President Joshua Goodman

Josh's From the President column in the Sept./Oct. Bulletin:

Fellow BIJ congregants: the summer draws to a close and the High Holy Days are nearly upon us. For me at BIJ, the summer has been a time of learning, of planning and of meeting people. Making Friday night and Saturday morning services a regular part of my week has had many benefits, not the least of which is providing a spiritual transition from the hectic work week that I can share with friends and family. I have also been able to experience the different types of services we offer and meet the ―regulars.

There is something very heartwarming about being greeted with a smile and a handshake every Shabbat morning by two of our long-time members, Arthur Becker and Lee Appel, as they stroll into the building. And speaking of friendly Shabbat greetings, I had the task this past Shabbat to fill in for Neil Bronstein. The fact that nearly everyone asked after him is a testament to how much he adds to our weekly services.

I have also spent considerable time talking with congregants and working with Rabbi Rosalind, with Lori Campbell and our staff, and with the entire Board to craft meaningful and exciting programs and opportunities for Jewish learning, observance, community building, and social action. Many of these will be announced during the High Holy Days. Several deserve mention here:

During the coming year, Friday night services will have a regular and familiar sequence:

•The first Friday of the month will be the ever popular First Friday potluck.
•The second Friday of the month will be a musical service, featuring David and Inara Morgenstern and others.
•The third Friday of the month will be a Friday Night Feast: an opportunity to come, eat, meet, and participate in a tableside service.
•The fourth Friday of the month will be our Sacred Chant and Drum service, a unique Friday night experience enjoyed by all who attend. Stay tuned and keep reading our bulletin, e- blasts, and website for further updates.

There are many other interesting things happening at BIJ, including a film series beginning with a very special film on Selichot on September 4th following a beautiful Havdallah service. BIJ is also joining a campaign to support the Women of the Wall in Israel that seeks to gather 10,000 photos of women around the world holding Torah scrolls, which will be sent to Israeli officials by Simchat Torah.

The High Holy Days are a time of reflection and taking stock, and are also a time when Jews around the world come together as communities. Please check our website, read our bulletin, call the office, and come join us on Shabbat, for High Holy Day services and for the many other exciting events throughout the year. Shana Tova.
