Beth Israel-Judea's Bimah

BIJ Sanctuary 200

Here you can see the Ark, Eternal Light and stained glass windows in the colors of the Tabernacle.

The Sanctuary is Congregation Beth Israel-Judea's formal prayer space, built in 1964. Its fixed wood pews face an elevated pulpit and features a tall Ark that holds many of the congregation's Torah scrolls.

The Ark is crafted from wood and stone in an elongated shape of the 10 Commandments, with bronze Hebrew letters providing the first words of each commandment.

A Ner Tamid (Eternal Light) is placed above the Ark doors and is a bare gas flame, the only such in San Francisco. A flame-shaped scupture frames the fire.

One feature of the Sanctuary are its many deep-colored blue, violet and red stained glass windows, which were chosen in remembrance of colors described in the Torah relating to the building of the the Tabernacle: Red, Blue, Purple and Gold.
