Congregation Beth Israel-Judea has a long and unique history.
The congregation was formed almost 50 years ago from the merger of two longtime San Francisco Jewish institutions: Congregation Beth Israel, founded in 1860 and then the oldest Conservative congregation west of the Mississippi, and the Reform Temple Judea, a young and growing Jewish community. The joined community created a fulfilling synthesis of traditional ritual and contemporary Jewish practice.
Located at the very southwest corner of San Francisco, Congregation Beth Israel-Judea is noted for its beautiful sanctuary as well as lovely Fireside Room, used as a chapel and library.
The congregation shares classrooms with the Brandeis Hillel Day School, next door. The sharing is integrated into the very design of the facility; for example, the white boards in the classes rotate, with materials for Brandeis on one side and Beth Israel-Judea on the other.
The synagogue's location provides convenient freeway access for members in the City, Pacifica coastside and North Peninsula areas. Vistors enjoy a large, free parking lot, unique in San Francisco.
